Newton’s Third Law of Motion
Brandon “Brand” Carmichael’s life was the stuff dreams were made of…too bad it was an illusion. As a guitarist for Inert Motion, Brandon traveled the world, performing with his brothers in all but blood. He never stopped moving all the while his mind played in a never ending loop. Now outside influences have changed the band’s course, leaving Brand’s life void of the balance he craved. Once again, his dream had become a recurring nightmare. Brand coped the only way he knew how; retreat into solitude.
Magdalena “Layna” Delacroix had achieved the long sought goal of her Ph.D. in Psychology, but success came at a high cost: over one hundred thousand dollars in debt. After being presented with the opportunity to fulfill her desire to help someone in the aftermath of tragedy, along with earning enough money to clear her debt and start a psychology practice of her own, Layna had to balance the means against the outcome. Could she be the force to stop the downward spiral of someone who refused to seek help?
Neither Brand nor Layna expected the reaction they had to one another. It was the opposite of everything they sought.
Could Layna live a lie while pushing Brand to live in the truth?
Would Brand forgive her for committing one unforgivable sin?
Or was he branded by destiny to be...
Reft by Libby Austin was such a surprising read. Just when I thought I knew what I was reading, when I thought I knew what this book was about, Libby Austin hit me with a twist in this story that really shocked me.
I was so excited to be on the review team for Libby Austin, I had read other books by her that I loved and expected that this book would be the same. Starting out reading Reft, I could tell there was some kind of underlying issue but I could not figure out what was going on, at all. Austin was not letting the cat breathe, must less out of the bag. So, I started to think Reft was going to be a "fluff" piece. I. was. wrong.
Brand has something going in his life. He has been keeping a secret for 13 years, his band mates didn't even know about this secret! When the band takes a break and Brand finds idle time on his hands, his world starts to crumble down around him.
He meets a new neighbor, a beautiful young woman named, Layna. Things seem to just fall into place for them, it is such an easy go lucky friendship. Things end up heating up for them and then the big twist, turn, and secrets start happening.... things get a little complicated.
Reft is such a strong emotional book, it gutted me. Austin continues to write outstanding storylines and to show uniqueness in her characters. This isn't your typical love story, this is different, you will fall in love with Brand, because you want to help make everything better. He has the heart of a saint.
I give Reft 5 stars!
