I was gifted this book from the author in exchange for an honest review (Thank You!)
Abstract Love by Samantha Christy was a book that affected me deeply. It's is one that will stay with me for a long time.
“There are only two reasons people don’t show up for chemotherapy…” And so begins a stunningly inspiring story of surviving, benevolence, and never settling for second best in finding your true love. Keri, a 24 year old bartender with stage 2 breast cancer, meets Jace, a 27 year old artist with stage 2 throat cancer. They slowly develop a close friendship as they sit across from each other for 11 weeks of chemo therapy treatments. As the weeks progress, they realize their friendship is developing into something much more. As Keri says, “we share a bond that no one wants to share,” a beautiful testament to the trials that cancer patients suffer. There is one problem that neither can forget – Jace has a girlfriend, leading to a private joke between Keri and Jace. When one begins to feel the attraction, they ask the other to “give me a side effect.”
I can’t recommend this book enough. The story was written with powerful details of the effects of cancer on the body without taking away from the gradual tale of their love. If anything it enhanced it. The banter between Keri and Jace was humorous and honest. This was not a sad story, it was anything but. However, it was an emotional story that had me in tears one minute and laughing the next.
If I could give it 10 stars, I would.
They come from different worlds.
Jace is an artist and humanitarian who had the picture-perfect childhood. He was raised by pretentious parents who already had his life scripted out with plans that included his long-time girlfriend, Morgan, the daughter of their best friends. Trying to break the mold, Jace pushes the boundaries of a future that was laid out for him.
Keri works as a bartender while finishing her college degree. She has a tainted past created by a tragedy that claimed her parents. She has found solace in her best friend, Tanner, and the kids she helps at a home for troubled youth.
Fate has dealt them each an unfortunate blow. While they are fighting for life and facing mortality, they meet in the most unlikely place. Keri and Jace find they share a connection deeper than most people can fathom. Is this bond strong enough for their relationship to transcend the issues and barriers that society places on them? They must sort out their feelings and overcome the disparity of their backgrounds before it’s too late.
